How to fix problems and system errors on the Chromebook?

Is your Chromebook too slow? If your Chromebook looks slow, your best bet is to just restart and see if the performance problem goes away. Otherwise, check for a system update – something may have gone wrong and Google needed to fix it on the software side. In most cases, a Chromebook should automatically check for updates and download the latest ones when connected to a wireless network.

You can also check manually by performing the following steps:

  1. Click on the System Clock located in the lower right corner.
  2. Click on the gear icon located in the pop-up menu.
  3. This takes you to  Settings.
  4. Click  About Chrome OS  listed on the left.
  5. Click the Check for updates button.
  6. This checks for the latest version and installs the update, if available.
  7. If your Chromebook has been updated, click the Restart  button  to finish

To recover, you need a Chromebook, a separate computer with access to the Chrome browser, and a portable SD or USB drive with 4GB of space or more to save data.

  1. Install and launch the extension of  Recovery Utility of the  Chromebook in Chrome on a separate computer.
  2. Click the ” Get started ” button in the pop-up window.
  3. Enter the model number of your Chromebook and click ” Continue “.
  4. Select the type of recovery media and click ” Continue “.
  5. Click on the ” Create Now ” button.

To use your flash drive or card again, you will need to return to the Recovery Utility application and do the following:

Reset your Chromebook: If it looks like you’re having a hardware problem, do the following:

  1. Force the Chromebook to shut down.
  2. Press and hold the ” Update ” and ” Power On / Off ” buttons.
  3. When the Chromebook restarts, release only the “ Update ” button.
  4. This performs a hardware reset that can fix your screen.

Note: This process may vary slightly based on your Chromebook, as some models may have a special reset button or ask you to remove the battery.

Chromebook won’t charge or turn on

It may be a battery problem, but you also cannot discard the connection of the Chromebook to an electrical outlet.

Allow time to charge: If your Chromebook was completely dead, you just plugged it in and now it won’t turn on, don’t panic. It may remain unavailable for a while. Wait a good 30 minutes before trying to boot the device again.

Charge on a different circuit: If it is not charging while plugged into an electrical outlet, try another outlet nearby and see if this resolves the problem. If not, take it to another room far away to try a different shot. If you start charging suddenly, there may be a lot of electrical noise in a specific circuit. Try disconnecting devices from the problematic circuit to see if they were causing problems with the Chromebook charger.

Check the charger: Is it damaged? Can you see the internal wires? Are the USB connector or charger pins bent? In that case, a new power adapter is in order.

Perform a hard reset: Use this method before moving on to the next option, which requires removing the battery.

Method 1:

  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold the Refresh button and tap the Power button.
  3. Once the Chromebook boots, release the Update button.

Method 2:

  1. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery.
  2. Press the Power button for 30 seconds.
  3. This supposedly unloads anything that is still lurking on the motherboard.
  4. replace the battery, connect the power adapter, and wait 30 minutes.

Chromebook doesn’t connect to my Wi-Fi network

Check the system clock to make sure the Wi-Fi icon is full. If it looks empty, your Wi-Fi is off. Here is a solution:

  1. Click on the System Clock located in the lower right corner.
  2. Click the Wi-Fi icon again in the pop-up menu.
  3. The Wi-Fi toggle button should turn blue when the Chromebook connects to the local network.
  4. You will also see a list of available networks.

Older wireless networks may not work with your Chromebook. This is unusual, but if your router is several years old, you can try a different network to see if you can get a better connection. If that happens, it’s time for a router upgrade. If in doubt, you can also restart your Chromebook. See how:

If you are using a USB-based dock to connect an external monitor, disconnect the dock, wait a few moments and reconnect. If you’re still having trouble, check if Chrome OS needs an update.

The Chromebook doesn’t sound at all

First, check to see if there are any obvious but sometimes unnoticed problems, such as headphones that you need to unplug before playing the sound over your speakers. If you are using an audio device such as external speakers, check that they are working correctly.

  1. If the problem appears to be with the Chromebook, do the following:
  2. Click on the System Clock located in the lower right corner.
  3. Adjust the volume slider displayed in the pop-up menu.
  4. Make sure the volume is loud enough to hear.

You can also try to change the sound input or output:

  1. Click on the  System Clock located in the lower right corner.
  2. Click the arrow icon displayed next to the volume slider in the pop-up menu. This icon won’t appear if you don’t have external sound devices connected to your Chromebook.
  3. In the following pop-up menu, make sure you have the correct audio device set as your output.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to reset your Chromebook by following the steps outlined above.

Bluetooth error: does not connect a device

First, remember that not all Chromebooks include Bluetooth, so check the product specifications. If available, the icon appears in the pop-up menu when you click on the System Clock. A blue icon means that the Bluetooth component is enabled, while a gray icon shows that it is disabled. Click the gray Bluetooth icon if it is disabled.

If you are having Bluetooth connection problems, turning the feature off and on will reset the connections. Just make sure that all Bluetooth codes are still correct and the devices are properly paired. Also, never forget your physical space. Objects and distance can initiate connectivity problems. Sometimes, a quick update (nearby) can set things right without much frustration.

The printer does not connect with Chromebook

You need to use Google Cloud Print to print a document successfully. It’s probably not an issue with your Chromebook. Instead, cloud-ready printers are often a hit or miss, so the existing printer may be the problem. Buying a cloud-ready printer offers the best results, but read the fine print to make sure you’re getting what you expect.

If you’re stuck with an old, less compatible printer, Google has a somewhat strange workaround. If you’re signed into the same Google account on another computer or regular laptop, you should be able to create a wireless connection with Google Cloud Print. After that, use your Chromebook – again, on the same account – to swipe a document or image over the cloud and then print it out.

The challenge with this clumsy workaround is that you need a secondary device that is not a Chromebook. For those who don’t have a backup PC, it’s time to upgrade to a printer compatible with your new configuration.
